Capitalism – Malignant Narcissism

Here we are malignant with greed
self serving pseudonyms that proclaim our creed
justice – just us – has judged and decreed
the tired, the poor, the huddled masses – unworthy seed

The wretched refuse, the homeless, the tempest-tost,
as refuse and compost for the garbage heap at what cost?
to fester and die, and decay in the darkness lost
lamp of liberty rejected and tossed

Malignant humans have blanked the golden door.
the light of Lady liberty just capitalism’s whore
malignant minds that destroy and foul God’s golden shores
our cancer exacts from us more and more

Our life blood seeps into vampiric vessels
as we on artificial life support, our mortality we wrestle
as the oncoming trains hurling crossed compromised trestles
our own conscience dead to reasonable redressel

What are we? we are not mammals for sure
a virus perhaps with no foreseeable cure
we befouled our nests, and loathed what is pure
our scent is just perfumed manure

The dust under the rug is piled so deep
that we lie awake and scream in our sleep
our children die in their dreams as they weep
as poisons to and from our lives continue to seep

Malignant Narcissism human hubris at its peak
we lie, we connive, we hide and we sneak
prophets of profits, our society wreaks
the present so dark, the future so bleak

Perpetual unsustainability
compromised values without culpability
unabashed arrogance without a shred of humility
proclaiming to be civilized without civility

What is man that thou art mindful?
we have forsaken the garden and remain prideful
we profit, we spin, we do what is dreadful
and our graveyards overflow with the dead-full

Religion, christs and buddhas have come
to bring light to the dark and raise us from scum
now money is our god and capitalism its son
greed is the spirit that we have become.

The turning time is now, the message is clear
the words of our true self is speaking to those who have ear
when we just watch from the watchtowers and repel the fear
the greed cannot infect us when we don’t adhere
the fear cannot infect us when we don’t adhere

So capital punishment is the dark heart of capitalism
we kill ourselves with unsustainable idealisms
the gallows are hung with corporate demonisms
birth and death to fuel the fools of you and me-isms

The turning time is now, the message is clear
the words of our true self is speaking to those who have ear
when we just watch from the watchtowers and repel the fear
the greed cannot infect us when we don’t adhere
the fear cannot infect us when we don’t adhere

  1. Excellent message, John!

Of course, really there is no “us and them.” We are all in this sinking ship of Earth together, and each of us is the culprit. The hard part is that the burden of our own individual greed must be rooted out before we can hope for change.

We’ve all heard it before: the car that you and I drive is “greedy” for the oil that is spweing into the Gulf (can’t live without it); the fumes it emits are warming our planet and already changing the biosphere in frightening ways.

Of course, each of us is “greedy” to want to use that car however we please. I know I am.

To some extent, we are held at the mercy of the filthy technologies we have already created, and changing that will require some serious upheaval, some huge personal sacrifices (or, what seem huge, anyway!).

Most of us ask ourselves if we are doing enough? Yet, how far are we willing to go? How much are we each ready to sacrifice, to change our daily activities?

    That is the question.
